2012 Toucan Wines Old Vine Carignane

(120+ year old Evangelho Vineyard, planted 1890)

Our 2012 Carignane was again the last fruit of the vintage picked from this ancient vineyard, harvested on September 18th. Just as we have for several years, we drove all night to arrive at the vineyard just as the sun was about to rise. Working with the picking crew, our fruit was quickly placed in bins and loaded on our trailer for the long drive back to Arroyo Grande. Once home, we crushed and slowly fermented the juice after a short period of cold soaking. The wine was then pressed into 50% new French, Hungarian and American oak barrels, and aged for 23 months before hand-bottling.

This vintage yielded a crop with slightly lower sugar levels (25.5 brix) that resulted in a wine that reached 14.8% alcohol instead of the usual 15.9 or 16%. This reduction is by no means a reflection of lesser quality or less forwardness the 2012 vintage is another perfect example of the fine fruit grown in this very old vineyard, very balanced and in some ways more complex than earlier vintages.

Our 2012 Old Vine Carignane is our fifth release from this special vineyard. We allowed 23 months of aging in fine oak barrels. This wine will develop for many years in the bottle. Drink 2015 2020.
